SynonymsFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The age of majority is the threshold of adulthood as it is conceptualized (and recognized or declared) in law. It is the chronological moment when a child legally ceases to be considered a minor and assumes control over their persons, actions and decisions, thereby terminating the legal control and legal responsibilities of their parents or guardian over and for them. The word majority here refers to having greater years and being of full age; it is opposed to minority, the state of being a minor. The law in a given jurisdiction may never actually use the term "age of majority" and the term thereby refers to a collection of laws bestowing the status of adulthood. The age of majority is a legally fixed age, concept or statutory principle, which may differ depending on the jurisdiction, and may not necessarily correspond to actual mental or physical maturity of an individual. In practical terms, there are certain specific actions which a person who attains the age of majority is permitted to take, which they could not do before. These may include entering into a binding contract, buying stocks, voting, buying and/or consuming alcoholic beverages, driving motor vehicles on public roads, and marrying without obtaining consent of others. The ages at which these various rights or powers may be exercised vary as between the various rights and as between different jurisdictions. For example, the ages at which a person may obtain a license to drive a car or consume alcoholic beverages vary considerably between and also within jurisdictions. Although a person may attain the age of majority in a particular jurisdiction, he or she may still be subject to age-based restrictions, such as the right to stand for elective office, act as a judge, and many other matters. GNU Free Documentation License I heard the age of majority in Scotland is 16. Can an American aged 16-18 go there alone if an adult OKs it? Q. I heard that you are legally considered an adult at the age of 16 in Scotland. I was curious if this applied to US citizen travelling there that was between the ages of 16 and 18 (being that the age of majority in the US as well as most other places is 18) with airline tickets purchased by an adult. What's the procedure behind this? Asked by . - Mon Dec 17 04:28:19 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. An individual is always subject to the laws of the country they are in and not those of their nationality... US laws never supersede the laws prevailing in another country. If you get here (Scotland) it matters not a jot where you are from, you are then subject to the laws of Scotland and, where applicable, those of Great Britain. However, what rules there are governing your purchase of an air ticket are those in the country where the purchase is made and at any prevailing departure points. Answered by KenR - Mon Dec 17 05:38:10 2007 As a person under the age of 18, do I have all the same rights as those over the age of of majority? Q. I was told that because I'm under 18, I am not a citizen, so there are certain rights (like the right to privacy) don't apply to me but does apply to anyone who has reached the age of majority. Asked by Kevin - Sun Nov 9 21:24:37 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. You are indeed a citizen despite being under 18. However, as a minor, you don't have many rights, other the right to be looked after properly by your parents. This means a safe place to live (not neccessarily a private place), food to eat, and to see that you go to school. Answered by Qextor - Sun Nov 9 21:42:25 2008 Are you allowed to emancipate yourself from your parents/guardians at 18 (age of majority) ?
Q. I cannot stand living with my manipulative mother and my whipped father. I am finally 18 and I don't think I can live 2 more years under their roof (I'm going to a community college). What are my legal options? How do I get them to ease up on the strictness? What are some of the implications I might face if I do declare emancipation? Are there any legal documentations stating my rights as an 18 year old? Asked by Clare B - Sat Jun 28 00:51:08 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. How are you going to be self-supporting, you said you are going to Community College, so I am guessing that you aren't working or are working PT. I can understand your frustration, but family is all we will ever have at certain times in our life, you may need them down the road to be there for you. It is especially tough with today's economy for young adults to get out on their own, once you do it's done, especially if you leave on bad terms. You need to make sure you can survive out there in the big scary world. Do you have a car? Money set aside for emergencies? What about health insurance? (I'm guessing that this one is provided by your parents for now.) Many things to consider, don't act too hastily. Good luck.
