Parenting is the process of promoting and supporting the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of a child from infancy to adulthood. Parenting refers to the activity of raising a child rather than the biological relationship.

In the case of humans, it is usually done by the biological parents of the child in question, although governments and society take a role as well. In many cases, orphaned or abandoned children receive parental care from non-parent blood relations. Others may be adopted, raised by foster care, or be placed in an orphanage.

The goals of human parenting are debated. Usually, parental figures provide for a child's physical needs, protect them from harm, and impart in them skills and cultural values until they reach legal adulthood, usually after adolescence. Among non-human species, parenting is usually less lengthy and complicated, though mammals tend to nurture their young extensively. The degree of attention parents invest in their offspring is largely inversely proportional to the number of offspring the average adult in the species produces.

What is the weirdest parenting advice you have ever recived ?
Q. Ok so I really hate it when people come up to you and try to give you parenting tips and they have no idea what they are talking about. It doesn't matter if they are family, friends or strangers. So whats the most off the wall thing someone has told you? bleach omg! that caller needs to be arrested and renered mute so that no one will ever listen to them again!

A. it wasn't given to me but it was given on a radio show by a caller. the topic was advice for dealing with a slightly unruly and hyper 1 year old. some lady told the radio host to get a squirt bottle, like you would use for a disobedient cat, and spray the back of the kid's neck with bleach. bleach!? the radio host disagreed with that vehemently, but...gee, have you read a bottle of bleach? you're not supposed to get that on your skin.

What are some of your best/most effective parenting tips?
Q. Hey. Just curious what some of your best and most effective parenting tips are, for any age. Thanks!

A. Every month my kids and I have a fun day...We'll go to the zoo, theatre, movies, Chuck-E-Cheese's, carnival, etc. Then once a week we have a movie night or game night at home. Everyday we eat at the table for dinner. It teaches the kids the importance fo family time. I also won't give a kid a cell phone unless they're driving and that's to be used if the car's in trouble. They can have a cell if the have a job and they have restrictions on it like not taking it to school and no texting feature allowed.

What are the biggest parenting controversies out there?
Q. Can you all please tell me what some of the biggest parenting controversies are? I know children's clothing is one. Thanks! I'm saying children's clothing because children's clothing, especially girl's clothing has gotten inappropriate. Stores sell low-cut shirts and short-shorts to girls under 11. I find that to be a disgrace. It's even more disgusting when these parents allow their girls to wear this stuff and buy it for them. Lost2day, you are the first one I've seen mention cellphones. That is a big issue. under 13 don't need cellphones.

A. I've been a mom for 29 years to 4 kids. I guess I can't agree that children's clothing is a controversial subject. I might have some issues with what my kids want to wear (such as the same jeans every day of the week), but I certainly am not at odds with other parents over what their kids are wearing. I do think the subject of stay-at-home mom versus "working" mom is a subject that often causes people to choose sides. Another issue that can be divisive is whether to vaccinate or not vaccinate your children. That subject can be controversial. There's also the breast feeding vs. formula feeding issue that's good for some interesting discussion. Since most of my kids are older now, one of the things often discussed in parenting circles… [cont.]

  • Parenting is among the most personal choices anyone ever makes. At the same time, no other individual decision has as significant a societal impact. Finding a careful balance between personal autonomy and the public welfare is often a considerable challenge.
  • Mrs. Darling first heard of Peter when she was tidying up her children's minds. It is the nightly custom of every good mother after her children are asleep to rummage through their minds and put things straight for next morning, repacking into their proper places the many articles that have wandered during the day. If you could keep awake (but of course you can't) you would see your own mother doing this, and you would find it very interesting to watch her. It is quite like tidying up drawers. You would see her on her knees, I expect, lingering humourously over some of your contents, wondering where on earth you had picked this thing up, making discoveries sweet and not so sweet, pressing this to her cheek as if it were a kitten, and hurriedly stowing that out of sight. When you wake up in the morning, the naughtiness and evil passions with which you went to bed have been folded up small and placed at the bottom of your mind; and on the top, beautifully aired, are spread out your prettier thoughts, ready for you to put on.
